I have a black and white image with thick black outlines and I need all the WHITE SPACE to be transparent. How can I do this using Photoshop or Illustrator? How do I create transparency in an image using Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop?
In Photoshop:
1 Create an empty transparent layer. Set i t as background (can lock it or put it in the bottom)
2 Create another layer.
3 Put the image in one layer and blacklines into other layer.
Can change transparency in the right panel (in layers list- check the layer and change transparency/opacity)How do I create transparency in an image using Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop?
You'll need Photoshop for this.
Open the image, then go to select - color range.
It'll let you pick the whites only.
You can use the slider to broaden or narrow your color range and the middle eye dropper to pick up more color.
Once you're done, you can either go to layer - create layer mask - hide selection. This should leave you with just the blacks showing. The white will still be there, just invisible.
If you want to have a layer with just black, use the same color selection, but select the blacks. Once you click okay, go to your layers pallet and create a new layer (layer - new). Then you go to edit - fill - and fill the selection with black.
When you switch off the original layer, you'll have just your outlines visible.
If you toss out your original layer from the file, you can save the new black outlines as a GIF and keep the transparency even for import into other programs.
If you want to overlay the piece in Photoshop on top of another picture, here's the superfast and easy shortcut.
Put the outline picture in the top layer.
In your layers window, go into the little drop menu that reads ';normal'; right now and chance the mode to ';darken'; and voila! only black outlines left. ';multiply'; will work too.
Good luck!
